Both/And or Neither/Nor? On the Prospect of “New Cosmopolitanism” to Serve as a Middle Ground between Cosmopolitanism and Nationalism

Abstract Over the course of past three decades, Western politics has gone from one extreme to another. Whereas immediate post-Cold War years were marked by a cosmopolitan heyday, in recent we are witnessing nationalist backlash. Given this heightened political polarization, quest for viable middle ground becomes all more pressing. The unlikely candidate that article considers is body thought been termed “new cosmopolitanism,” but on closer inspection neither new nor cosmopolitan. Tracing its dualistic conception Stoicism and Kantianism, it argued cosmopolitanism” much richer modest than label suggests. Whether qualifies serve as between cosmopolitanism nationalism, however, depends readiness cosmopolitans” make practical either/or choices where both/and or neither/nor categories do not hold.
